Broodmares
The ladies of SingleTree Farm bear special mention when anyone comes looking to see our Dartmoor ponies. The stallions are of course grand and important, but our wonderful broodmares are equally important.
The SingleTree broodmares don’t just sit at home. They travel, work, perform and demonstrate that they can reproduce their best characteristics when bred to quality stallions. That said, they are all well-loved members of the SingleTree family, and there isn’t a mare here that won’t retire either with me or a hand-picked family when her breeding days are over and they aren’t quite ready to lie down under a tree. All these mares are solid citizens and highly respected here at SingleTree Farm and throughout the pony world.

Farnley Gabrielle
GABBY has produced foals that are proving how much character this mare has. SingleTree Gemma is a national level winning CDE pony who is now teaching the next generation of whips the technical points of upper level combined driving. SingleTree Grendel is a wonderful child’s first pony, as are SingleTree Gillian, Georgia Brown, Glenda, and currently the youngest, Gidget. This year Gidget is in foal to Cruachan Valentine and has started the long trek to becoming a top level CDE pony. Since she is showing such solid promise, I have kept Gidget for Tracey Morgan and myself to continue breeding a line of advanced driving ponies. Gabby, herself, is still in work, but retired from breeding. She is living with Sally Goldfarb, who owns and breeds top Connemara ponies with her mother, Mary Nell Eyles. Sally has three small children who ride like the wind and who are getting their start on Gabby before moving up to the bigger Connemaras. Gabby is nearing 20. Click here for pedigree page.

Farnley Lady Fair
NUTKIN has had an active and varied life. As a young mare she was a successful hunter pony on the local circuit in Atlanta, GA. She then had two nice foals (one being MBR Prince Valiant, a young stallion owned by Barbara Ferrer and presently leased by Lucy Austin) and SingleTree Duncan who is in Oregon packing many a small child around. After having those foals, Nutkin was needed as a driving pony for Jonathan Lambert of Franklin, TN, who, as a junior driver was just starting out in the CDE venue. The two were quite successful and ultimately Jonathan graduated to a pair so we added Farnley Winnie (owned by Laurie McClearen) and Jonathan continued his solid success with the pair.
Nutkin then came home to have another foal, SingleTreeTabitha Twitchit (who has now graduated to becoming part of Tracey Morgan’s new young pair). At that point Tracey decided to make a serious attempt to qualify for the USET Team to compete for the World Championships in Austria. She needed a second spare, so Nutty was nominated. She went off to Tracey’s and qualified for FEI level competition by winning the Georgia CDE, Southern Pines, and Gladstone as a tandem with SingleTree Gemma. After deciding that Gemma was the spare to go overseas, Nutkin came home to once again have foals and pack the grandchildren around the farm. What a grand lady she is! She is currently in foal to Shilstone Rocks Snowshoes, so whatever it is should be a gentle soul. Click here for pedigree page.

Shenandoah Madame Butterfly
MADDIE is a younger mare and has had three foals. SingleTree Roadside Skipper has recently been purchased to join a pair for CDE. SingleTree Whiskey Eye is in western New York as a stallion prospect. SingleTree Dixie Skipper has been purchased in Georgia as a prospective broodmare. Maddie is about to take a break and be a child’s riding pony for a couple of years. Maddie is also a joy to drive, but was never interested in the CDE world, which was way too much work for Maddie. She is a very laid-back mare, with lots of elegance and charm. With all her foals off to good homes, Maddie is enjoying her present job of packing children and being brushed for endless hours. Click here for pedigree page.

LACE WING is all lady. She is a quiet mare who has had three lovely foals. She is a favorite because of her quiet and genteel nature, and she is a delight to both ride and to drive. Lace Wing was easy to break and has always done her job in a pleasant, forthright manner. At the moment she is also at work under saddle for Catherine Frye, a local instructor here in North Carolina who has taken a shine to our Darties. So once again she is teaching the younger generation to ride along with enduring many hours of hoof picking 101, brushing (mostly the lower half of the pony) and tons of carrot consumption.
Her youngest offspring, SingleTree Jitterbug (by Boveycombe Banjo) is a very nice gelding being offered for sale.

MAUDE is the last, but not least, of my small group of mares. Maude has a quite a back-story. She was born on the Moors of Dartmoor as part of the Newtake Scheme in the UK, and I bought her right off the moor as a weanling and shipped her home with an airplane load of the Queen’s race horses. There was just something that caught my eye on that very cold and wet day as they pushed the foals through the chutes for weaning. She has always been a gracious mare, but early on displayed some steel and determination, which were exactly the traits I was after in buying a Newtake pony. I wanted a bit of that survivor element with the added grace from a wonderful British stallion, Jurstonparke Joker. Tracey Morgan has had Maude for several years for FEI level competition in combined driving. Maude and Joe (Gaylen Romeo) have been at the top as national winners in the pair division for combined driving for the past few years. They have three times been national pony pairs champions, were 11th in the entire world in Austria, and have multiple wins all over the country. Maude has had one foal, SingleTree Roulette, and Roulette is now in foal to Shilstone Rocks Snowshoes. Roulette is currently owned by Lory Eighme in Pennsylvania, and this should be quite a foal… better start calling Lory now if you’re interested! Click here for pedigree page.
